Sydney was made for a romantic drive, and the best of them run along the harbour and the coast at golden hour.
The harbour at dusk
Few cities do an evening drive like Sydney. The run along New South Head Road through the Eastern Suburbs to Watsons Bay, with the Hermitage Foreshore and the Gap along the way, is the classic romantic route, especially with the top down in the convertible Rolls-Royce Dawn.
Coast and headlands
North of the bridge, the drive out to Mosman and Balmoral, or along the Northern Beaches to the headlands, trades harbour glamour for open sky and ocean. South, the Royal National Park and the Cronulla coast make a quieter, equally beautiful run.
A classic harbour loop
If you want one route that never disappoints, start in the east and work anticlockwise around the harbour. Come up New South Head Road through Double Bay and Rose Bay, pause at the Hermitage Foreshore walk for the postcard view back to the Bridge, then continue to Watsons Bay and the cliffs at The Gap. From there, cross the Harbour Bridge and drop into Kirribilli and Milsons Point, where the Opera House sits framed under the arch — the single most photographed angle in the city. It's roughly an hour of driving at an unhurried pace, and every window is a picture.
Sunset lookouts worth the detour
The magic is in the light, so time the drive for the hour before dusk. Mrs Macquarie's Chair in the Royal Botanic Garden looks straight across to the Bridge and Opera House and holds the sun late into the evening. Dudley Page Reserve in Dover Heights gives you the whole skyline from a quiet grass rise most visitors never find. Bradleys Head in Mosman and the Hornby Lighthouse walk at Watsons Bay trade the skyline for open water and headland. Any one of them turns a drive into a moment worth stepping out for.
South of the city
For something wilder, head south. The Grand Pacific Drive from the Royal National Park over the Sea Cliff Bridge — a cantilevered curve that hangs out over the ocean — is one of the most dramatic coastal roads in the country, and a completely different mood to the harbour: cliffs, surf and open sky rather than city glamour. It's a longer run, so it suits an afternoon rather than a pre-dinner loop.
Pairing the drive with dinner
The drive is even better with a destination. Harbourside tables at Catalina in Rose Bay, Quay or Aria at Circular Quay, or Ripples at Milsons Point all sit naturally on a harbour loop, and your chauffeur can time the run so you arrive as the light drops. Tell us the booking and we'll build the route and the timing around it, with the car waiting to bring you home afterwards.
Let someone else drive
The most romantic part of a drive is not having to think about it, no parking, no navigating, just the two of you. A chauffeured car turns the evening into the occasion: dinner, the scenic route, and a calm ride home. See anniversary & romantic car hire or go straight to Rolls-Royce anniversary hire.
